There was much excitement when these feathers arrived from Charters Towers in Far North Queensland – sent to be by a lovely friend who understands my love of feathers and lives in an area with amazing bird life.
On opening the parcel the feathers immediately reminded me of Aboriginal mythology.
Their wonderful markings suggested Aboriginal art, and I could not wait to sit down and sort through each feather – which I might say took quite some time. I already had visualised a Rainbow Serpent made from the tiny Red-tailed Black Cockatoo feathers. I could not wait to get started……
In the winter of 2006 while travelling in the Lawn Hill area we were taken to see a very large Rainbow Serpent, some 50 meters high up along a rock face – it took us ages to actually recognize it as it was so well camouflaged.
Some say the Rainbow Serpent is the giver of life, due to its connection to water, however it can be a destructive force if enraged…
I thoroughly enjoyed creating this work – my version of a Rainbow Serpent made from the magnificent feathers of the red-tailed black cockatoo.
