A special friend gave me these feathers who a few years ago was returning to Alice Springs when she spotted feathers from a Black Kite. Fancy collecting them, putting them into a ago, placing them in her suitcase and flying back to Brisbane to deliver them to me… only a truly wonderful friend would do that!
As with most of my works, I visualise the overall concept before I begin. I needed a large piece of Fabriano paper for this piece and the feathers needed some extra special treatment. I patiently cross stitched each feather into place and onto the heavy paper.
The black kite is a medium sized bird of prey. They are opportunistic hunters, more likely to scavenge, they spend a lot of time soaring high in the thermals looking for food.
